March
23/08
At least three more cars were set ablaze early Sunday
morning in east Oak Cliff, making it the third series of arson attacks
on vehicles in the area in four weeks. Two cars were burned in the
1300 and 1500 blocks of Seevers Avenue near Beckley Avenue South, and
a third was torched in the 1900 block of nearby Ramsey Avenue.
Gasoline was used to start the fires, as in all the previous arsons....

Day laborers say immigration, not safety, focus of operation ...
March
19/08
Traffic problems caused by day laborers who go onto the
street seeking employment have forced police officials to use
plainclothes officers to try to halt the practice, authorities say.
But the undercover operation – now in its sixth month – has caused
anxiety among some workers who fear that the police effort may
actually be an attempt to catch illegal immigrants. Police say they
are simply concerned about safety, not illegal immigration. They say
laborers block traffic at Interstate 35E and State Highway 121 when
they rush out into the street to meet would-be employers....

NTTA is asked to exit I-35 project ...
March 10/08
Denton County commissioners asked the North Texas
Tollway Authority to opt out of the Interstate 35E expansion project,
in order to avoid delays on future road projects. Commissioners issued
a formal resolution last week asking the tollway authority to waive
its interest in the project, because the county could not afford a
delay in the distribution of State Highway 121 revenue, which is
helping to pay for I-35E, said John Polster, the county’s
transportation consultant. Monday, the county appeared optimistic the
tollway authority was moving toward waiving its interest in I-35E and
removing a potential roadblock by April, Polster said....

Firefighter Stops To Help Woman along i-35, Has His Truck Stolen ...
March 9/08
A Dallas firefighter's truck was stolen when he stopped
to help the victim of a hit-and-run on Sunday morning, he said. While
he was on his way to work, Michael Wolfe pulled into the hazard lane
on southbound Interstate 35 just before the Zang exit to help a woman
stranded on the freeway. A passing car slowed down, and then the
passenger jumped into his red Ford Ranger and drove off with it, Wolfe
said. A woman who had stopped to help alerted him to the theft, he
said. "There was another passerby who decided to stop and render aid
as well, and as I was speaking with the lady who was in the accident,
the other passerby told me there was somebody hopping in my truck,"
Wolfe said....

Messy commute in North Texas as snow moves east of Dallas ...
March 7/08
Patches of ice, on mostly bridges and overpasses,
slowed the Friday morning commute for portions of the Dallas-Fort
Worth area as accidents snarled traffic and briefly closed some roads.
Slick roads caused accidents at Interstate 35E and I-20 and along U.S.
Highway 67. An accident at Central Expressway and Meadow Road in
Dallas involved a fire truck. In Denton, southbound lanes at Teasley
Lane and I-35E were closed for a spell. On the northbound side,
18-wheelers slid sideways with one tractor-trailer rig stuck on the
side of the road....
